Nintendo Family Computer (Famicom) Autopsy

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

Yesterday I posted about a PC World autopsy on the original Game Boy. Today I want to mention another great dissection of theirs, this time of the Nintendo Family Computer or Famicom, the Japanese version of an Nintendo Entertainment System.

The unit dissected is a 1983 unit that is distinctly red and grey, and a childish-looking oddity to most Westerners who have never seen one before. It is a small square console that loads cartridges from the top, and has power and reset buttons, along with an eject lever to remove the carts. The Famicom shipped with two wired controllers that were directly attached to the unit-meaning you couldn’t swap them out. Interestingly enough there was no standard cart style or design for this system, as each manufacturer made their own. One controller also had a built in microphone that picked up any sounds the player made and projected them through the television.

During the dissection check out the motherboard, RF modulator, cpu, and 60 pin connector, which “read” the carts.

Also mentioned is the Famicom Disk System (FDS), a Japan-only add-on designed to lengthen the life of the system as it aged. This add-on used proprietary floppy disks. It could also run on either electricity or 6 C batteries if there was not an outlet nearby.

Check out the Japanese Famicom autopsy on PC World here.

Gadget Autopsy of the Nintendo Gameboy

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

Remember these?

In honor of the anniversary of the Nintendo Gameboy’s 1989 release PC World has a cool slideshow and article on what’s really inside the thing. They dissect the thing to find out what really makes it tick. Check out the motherboard, two circuit boards, battery contacts, cpu, button inputs and more.

It should come as no surprise that the internal workings are actually pretty simple, which the author argues may help the GB’s longevity. I’m going to agree with him on this one-my 20 year old Gameboy still works like a charm, as long as I have 4 AA batteries.

The original Gameboy had 4 “shades” of gray and green, 8 kb of RAM, 160×144 pixel LCD, 256 byte ROM, 8 bit Sharp LR35902 core (4.19 MHz), 1 speaker, and a built in serial port to link two systems together.

Sonic 4 Episode 1 Demo Impressions

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

I recently downloaded and tried Sonic 4 Act 1 from the Xbox Live Marketplace. This is the must anticipated sequel to the series which pretty much ignores any recent 3d iteration of Sonic, and takes him back to his roots in a solo side-scrolling adventure.

The game plays similar to the Genesis series of Sonic games in that you go from left to right by running or using your special spindash move as you collect rings and avoid or pounce on enemies. Sonic has retained one aspect of the new games though, and that’s his homing attack. With the press of a button you can jump onto any enemy or spring that you automatically lock onto. This works well, but takes some getting used to in a game done in the old side scrolling style.

The demo lets you play one level of one act. In typical Sonic fashion you start out in a Green Hill-esque zone, with water, sunflowers, green and brown landscapes, tons of rings and a handful of enemies. Sonic and the enemies have been rendered in 3d this time around, while the rest of the levels are mostly 2D (albeit very good looking 2D). There are some nice graphical touches, such as the 3D rings, which rotate around and look much nicer now that they don’t look so flat. Sonic looks crisp and moves fast, and gains running momentum easily enough.

The music at the starting screen also made a sharp impression on me: it’s a remix of a classic Sonic tune, and the title screen itself will look familiar if you’ve ever played a Sonic game in the past.

Episode 1 is available now for $15.

It’s hard to give a full review based on one level (Splash Hill) that I passed in a few minutes, but this game looks very promising. There are however only 4 zones, three acts, and the boss battles after every third act, so the game definitley could feel like an episodic dlc add-on. At 1200 Microsoft points or $15 U.S. I might not be picking it up anytime soon unless there is a price drop. Still if you’re a huge Sonic 4 and have been wanting a 2D version on a console then it’s at least worth looking into.

Red Dead Redemption “Undead Nightmare” Trailer

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

Rockstar has revealed more about their upcoming Undead Nightmare dlc pack for Red Dead Redemption. We’ve already seen screenshots and a teaser trailer before, but now the official game trailer has been released.

In it we see the focus of the campaign, which features Seth the graverobber and John and his family as they fight off the zombie horde. It looks like there will be slow moving, lumbering zombies as well as quicker ones that will run or leap at John Marston. The popular zombified bear also returns, as well as a zombie horse that John apparently aquires.

Check out the announcement on Rockstar’s blog here.

Marston dies again

All that's left to reveal is an exact release date.

My thoughts: What can I say about RDR that hasn’t been said already? Rockstar continues to deliver some great gameplay and DLC. I’ll be picking this up as soon as I can. All that’s left is an official release date (“coming very soon” is too much of a tease).

Halo: Reach Map Pack Due for November

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

Bungie has announced a trio of new maps for Halo: Reach in November. The maps include Anchor 9, Tempest, and Breakpoint. Bundled together they will cost 800 MSP or $10 U.S. Also included will be new achievements with a potential 250 extra gamerscore.  Dubbed the Noble Map Pack, it will be available for download on November 30th.

Anchor 9 is a close quarters combat map based on an orbiting docking and repair station for UNSC craft. Up to 8 players can face off here.

Tempest supports up to 16 players in a larger more open environment, with several buildings on either side of the map and lots of open space in between.

Breakpoint is similar, with the whole map consisting of an ice landscape, with archeological buildings strewn throughout.

Bungie is said to be tweaking them for their November release.

In the meantime check out the screenshots from Bungie here.

Grand Turismo 5 Delayed Again; May Be Out By Christmas

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

Sony’s high profile racer Grand Turismo 5 has been delayed, and will miss it’s November 2nd release date. Sony made the announcement on October 13th, but only recently explained it. They argued that there were still some kinks to be worked out in the advanced systems of the game, which was first announced back in 2005.

Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi was translated via Kotaku on his Twitter account as saying, “I’m really sorry. Everyone, it’s inexcusable,” and “it’s because time and labor were spent ironing the kinks out of [the game's] complex system.”

Sony Europe tried to soften the blow by saying that they still expect the game to be out by Christmas.

What specific kinks needed to be worked out in the game is anyone’s guess, but GT5 is supposed to promise almost 1,000 vehicles, with 70 plus tracks in 20 different locations. It also includes licenses such as NASCAR. GT5 looks like it may be the most involving and realistic racing game to date, but that’s only if it comes out, which may be another few months at least.

The Retro League

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

The classic video game podcast The Retro League takes another one of my questions this week. At about 1:31:00 into the episode they discuss some horror/Halloween themed games, and consider my request for a Halloween themed episode here in a few weeks. Hopefully the week of Halloween we will see a cool horror/Halloween themed episode from them. I’d love to see what classic horror games or levels they enjoy.

Also congrats to them for recording their 52nd episode and celebrating their first podcast anniversary.

Check out Episode 52 here.

If you’re into retro gaming like I am, or enjoy browsing retro gaming magazines then you should check out the Out of Print archive.

What makes them unique is that they ask for permission from the former publishers to be sure that they have the rights to re-publish them online. They do everything for free in order to preserve the original magazines. Think of them as a national archive of classic gaming magazines.

Rockstar recently announced on their blog that a friendly free roam mode is coming to Red Dead Redemption. No release date has been set yet. Rockstar has only released one screenshot showing exactly how you will be able to choose your multiplayer option from the main menu:

Is this finally an answer to griefing?

It appears this is Rockstar’s answer to griefing in the game, which has been a huge issue ever since the game was released.

Super Scribblenauts 10/12
Solitaire Overload Plus 10/12
Monopoly 10/26
Goldeneye: 007 11/2
James Bond 007: Blood Stone 11/2
