NHL ’94

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

Sometimes a game just takes off and grabs the imagination of gamers. It becomes a classic, a retro game that gains a following through the years. With some people it’s Donkey Kong, with others Space Invaders, Halo, or The Legend of Zelda.

And with others it’s a sports game-specifically NHL ’94.

NHl ’94.com is an NHL ’94 fan site for the classic SNES and Genesis game. Here gamers can join and compete in online leagues to play the game head-to-head against others. There are multiple seasons each calendar year, and emulators are used to play online.

Members of the league can download mods that update the rosters for each team to depict the latest changes. This keeps the basic spirit of the game in tact without the obvious flaw of it becoming outdated with each new season.

What started as a simple fan site has turned into a very dedicated community, with over 3,000 members and ongoing leagues year round.

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

No this isn’t a post about harassing your opponents by abusing them over the mic, instead it’s a much friendlier form of harassment.

The guys over at The Creeper Colony, a Starcraft fan site, have posted some quick tips for how to harass your opponents with a limited number of units. Air, carrier, and ground harassment tips are suggested depending on whether or not you have cloaked units or banshees.

If you’re new to Starcraft and need some help I suggest you visit their site. I’ll let the article speak for itself-you can check it out here.

Cool Gaming Tech from CES 2011

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

The Consumers’ Electronics Show has come and gone. Ford announced their new electric Ford Focus, Motorola caused a stir with their Xoom tablet, and super phones were all over the place.

What generally gets less attention though is video game technology, and even though CES is more about PC, 3D tv and other similar hardware, some cool gadgets and accessories came out.

Penguin United announced a new mouse and keyboard combination for the Xbox 360 called Eagle Eye 360, which is a counterpart to their PS3 mouse and keyboard. Two programmable control schemes can be saved, and all of your typical Xbox 360 buttons can be assigned to keyboard keys. Initial setup requires a wired controller, but after that it shouldn’t be a problem. A 13 foot USB cable connects the device to the console. So while it’s not wireless, it’s still a pretty cool device, especially since so many people prefer playing their first person shooters on a PC control scheme. A price and release date has yet to be announced.

The Razer Switchblade was a very cool announcement. The Switchblade is a 7 inch multi-touch screen portable gaming PC. The keyboard consists of a set of transparent buttons laid on top of an LCD screen. The buttons can change dynamically depending on what game you are playing and the situation. The example that Razer showed off was World of Warcraft. Supposedly the system is smart enough to adapt to your playing situation.

It’s also looks to be sleek and lightweight. Most people are saying it’s about netbook size, which is good. It’s also powered by the Intel Atom processor, and they claim it is optimized for web browsing, media playback, and office productivity (although I have my doubts as to how productive anyone will be on a portable gaming PC). The Atom is built on the x86 architecture.

Chief Executive Min-Liang Tan said that PC gaming, “has always been impossible in a portable form factor.” Razer wants to change that.

A release date and price has not been announced yet however. I could see this working, but only if it’s cheap enough. If it is within the $400-$600 range I could see it being successful, but anything more and it will be a tough sell to both hardcore and casual gamers.

Also of note was Nyko’s showing of their third party accessories. Most of their support was for the Playstation Move in the form of two or four wand charging stations, and a nifty black and yellow-orange rifle called the Power Shot (and it’s handgun counterpart the Perfect Shot), which should make the FPS genre on the PS3 more interesting. Outside of that they also showed off some Xbox 360 charging stations and a cool looking Perfect Shot gun for the Wiimote.

Overall nothing overly crazy came out of CES 2011, but there were a few gems for gamers. The 360 keyboard could be really handy and a nice gift for fans of the FPS genre on the 360. The Switchblade could be a nice item and more than just a novelty if done right. And Nyko’s third party support for all three consoles looks to be strong in 2011.

Andrew Laidlaw Reclaims Galaga World Record

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

Andrew Laidlaw, a resident of Washington state and former Galaga world record holder, has gained a new high score of 4,525,150. This beats the former score held by Phil Day of 3,275,720.

Andrew was playing on a tournament setting that only allows him to use five lives on the hardest difficulty setting. His record has been verified by the video game referees over at Twin Galaxies.

Even better, Andrew and Phil have bonded over Galaga and have traded hints and tips over the years. Phil however has retired from Galaga, so unless someone can challenge Andrew the record should stay for a while.

Manly Guys Doing Manly Things

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

I recently found a popular video game related webcomic that just debuted this year called “Manly Guys Doing Manly Things.” Written by Kelly Turnbull, MGDMT is a webcomic that focuses on a commander who runs a temp agency for out of work video game characters. Expect parodies of God of War, Gyrados of the Pokemon series, The Legend of Zelda, and more.

Apart from video games, the whole theme is “men being men.” Not talking about their emotions but solving problems and springing into action. It serves as both an homage to men in video games and a parody of the ridiculousness of it all.

Super Fighter Team and Retro Game Publication

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

If you are into retro or classic games at all then you’re probably well aware that many games simply do not get released here in the U.S. after their initial Japanese release. Either they are deemed unappealing to the U.S. audience and would lose money, or the company folds before they can get their game translated.

That’s where Super Fighter Team comes in. Founded by game designer and salesman Brandon Cobb, SFT legally acquires the rights to games from classic systems such as the Genesis and SNES, and releases them in the U.S. Even better, they give them an actual physical copy release, complete with case and manual. Most of their games come from Taiwan, but occasionally they deal with games from other countries such as China.

Their namesake comes from their first game they ever acquired the rights to: Super Fighter for the PC. Super Fighter is a very sharp looking Street Fighter clone, with beautiful graphics, large detailed characters, eight fighters total, and gorgeous background.

If you  don’t believe me check out the screenshots for yourself:

And that was just their first release. They have nine games that have either been released or will be released shortly, such as Star Odyssey, a RPG reminiscent of the classic Phantasy Star series and Sango Fighter, a PC fighting game with a historical twist.

If you’re into retro gaming and want to pick up a “new” retro game, then SFT is worth checking out. Their specialty seems to be RPGs and fighting games. So far the games all look clean and safe in terms of content as well, so that’s a plus for any Christian.

ESRB Gives Ratings to More PS1 Games

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

New PSOne classics have been rated by the ESRB, in what is probably in anticipation of their release on the Playstation Network.

Xenogears, Legend of Mana, Vagrant Story, Threads of Fate, Arc the Lad III, and R4 Ridge Racer Type 4 have all been reviewed for PS3 and PSP release. With the exception of Threads of Fate and Ridge Racer all games are rated T for Teen. Threads of Fate and Ridge Racer are the two games rated E for Everyone.

So if you’re looking for some clean, classic downloadable games for the Playstation 3 or PSP stay tuned for release dates. Sony has been silent on details so far.

The Return of SSX?

   Posted by: Cornelius    in Uncategorized

I stumbled across the SSX Deadly Descents trailer recently. I’ve seen it over and over again, and while it looks like SSX is returning, I’m curious as to what the end result will be.

In the trailer snowboarders leap from helicopters and descend down deadly mountains on their boards. The graphic style looks very serious, and reminiscent of Call of Duty. Gone are the over the top characters and voice acting. We also don’t see any tricks or gameplay footage in this one, which is a disappointment since the SSX series was always known for that.

It looks like the series may be taking a far more serious approach to the snowboarding genre, which is a shame, because the previous SSX games were so over the top and ridiculous that they were insanely fun, with tons of unlockables and replay value.

Maybe Electronic Arts wanted to re-launch the series in a more serious direction to mimic some of the more serious extreme sports games that have come out in the past few years, like the Skate series.  Regardless, without the goofiness of the original series SSX is bound to lose some of it’s charm.

Will it be a good game? Possibly, but fans of the previous game may reject it. Hopefully EA will be able to change our minds once they reveal more of the gameplay.
